Ok, I'll bite--
What are pivot tables, and why are they (apparently, supposedly) so complicated to set up or use correctly?

I'll edit my question a bit. Do you have a recommendation on a specific book or lines of books that is good for learning VBA on Excel and other office programs? I've tried a couple with little satisfaction.

I've got a similar question to the one above.

I'm trying to find a book to help my daughter (16) learn excel outside of the classroom on her own with me helping/tutoring as needed. Can you recommend anything like that? Thanks.

Franky,

I have a problem that deals with pulling data from multiple files to create a summary sheet for month and quarter end. This form is a daily form filled out by the shift supervisor and mailed to me. I receive 60+ of these files a month. they are identical forms but are not tubular. It's a justified form that was never designed to be used for this purpose. Short of hand referencing the 14 items that i need from each shifts report is there an easier way to pull these workbooks together?

Frank,
I've been asked to calculate continuous returns and the average continuous returns in the period given a set of data for over 1000 figures.

I've looked everywhere and could not get my head around on how to do it on excel. I understand that rate of return using continuous compounding is log Pt/(Pt-1), but couldn't figure out how to do it on excel.

I've got a large sheet with lots of data in columns and want to make several scatter plots, e.g. col. A vs. col. B, C vs. D, etc. Once I get a plot looking right with the labels, range, etc. and then sort on a col. not in that plot, it screws up the plot making the x-axis the col. no. which makes no sense. Do you know how to keep this from happening?
I find in in Excel 2003 and 2007. And MUST the data be in adjacent cols? Thanks.

I just tried it, and it didn't seem to happen to me? Is there any way to send me an example sheet with fake data?

Well, I'm dumbfounded. I just made a sample table of my data for two scatter plots, 4 cols. by 500 rows, ready to send you, made the plots and now don't see the problem after sorting. The problem is still there for the full data set however. Very strange, but there must be an explanation.

Without having the spreadsheet in front of me, it's hard to say what it could be. How are you sorting the data? Are you going data --> sort, or are you just clicking on the sort icon?
Also, the data doesn't have to be in adjacent cols to do scatter plots.

Hope that helps.
